I truly believe that in order to be a good designer you need to know the history of graphic design as well as the fundamentals. It’s not that minimalism is the end all and be all of graphic design, but being able to reduce a client’s message to the bare necessities while still getting their message across takes skill. You have to know the rules in order to break them or to use them in the best possible way. As Jonathan Notaro points out in this article, “Minimalism will never go out of style because simplicity never gets old.” This should be a good reminder to all of the designer’s coming up today, style will always win out over the latest trend.
